拉電流和灌電流其實就是把外部負載連接到電路，系統，微控制器或其他電子設備的連接方式。以下圖為例，電路圖中的負載為1k電阻，當然也可以是消耗電流的任何負載，例如LED和串聯電阻的組合體，或者是繼電器的線圈，燈泡等。電路圖中的設備可以是任何電子電路或設備，例如微控制器，FPGA，CPLD，邏輯電路等。

當我們在微控制器引腳和GND之間連接1K的負載電阻時。當微控制器引腳輸出為高電平（邏輯1）時，微控制器將向負載提供電流。在此配置中，邏輯1將為負載供電，如果負載是LED，那么就是點亮LED，邏輯0將停止為負載供電，也就是關閉LED。
所以說當負載連接到設備，從而電流從電源流到設備中時，這樣的連接方式就是拉電流。需要注意的是，不要超過IC可以輸出的電流，以免損壞IC。
那么灌電流就更好理解了，舉個例子，在電源（例如+ 5V）和微控制器引腳之間連接了電阻或LED。當微控制器引腳被切換為高電平（邏輯1）時，負載電流被切斷。當微控制器將引腳切換為低電平（邏輯0）時，電流流過負載，這樣的連接方式就是灌電流。同樣灌電流也是有限制的，設計時應查到IC的灌電流能力是多少。
