按理說(shuō)，這種想法是非常自然的，畢竟水波、電磁波都是波。但問(wèn)題是，當(dāng)我們說(shuō)水波是由水分子的振動(dòng)引起時(shí)，我們的確看見(jiàn)了水，所以說(shuō)“水是水波的介質(zhì)”沒(méi)什么問(wèn)題。
但如果你說(shuō)電磁波也是由某種介質(zhì)的振動(dòng)引起的，那這種介質(zhì)是什么？光就一種電磁波，光可以在太空、真空中傳播，而這里似乎什么都沒(méi)有，不存在什么介質(zhì)。你總不能說(shuō)電磁波是由某種介質(zhì)的振動(dòng)引起的，但又說(shuō)不出這種介質(zhì)是什么吧？
是，電磁波的確有可能存在介質(zhì)，只是我們還沒(méi)發(fā)現(xiàn)，沒(méi)發(fā)現(xiàn)并不代表它不存在。但是，你也要明白這么做的巨大風(fēng)險(xiǎn)：這是在假設(shè)一種看不見(jiàn)、摸不著，目前任何實(shí)驗(yàn)都觀測(cè)不到，卻又在太空、真空中廣泛存在的介質(zhì)。
雖然一聽(tīng)就不怎么靠譜，但想到只有這樣才能不違背牛頓的觀念，人們（包括麥克斯韋、赫茲）就紛紛接受了，并將這種介質(zhì)命名為以太。也就是說(shuō)，如果我們把電磁波看作以太的振動(dòng)，就像把水波看作水的振動(dòng)那樣，它就可以與牛頓的觀念和平共處了。
然而，我們都知道愛(ài)因斯坦在狹義相對(duì)論里把以太仍了，也就是把作為電磁波介質(zhì)的以太仍了。他認(rèn)為并不能把電磁波看作以太的振動(dòng)，電磁波不需要介質(zhì)，它跟水波有本質(zhì)的區(qū)別。
那有人就要問(wèn)了：如果電磁波沒(méi)有介質(zhì)，它是怎么傳播出去的呢？
我反倒想問(wèn)一句：你憑什么覺(jué)得只要是波，就一定要有介質(zhì)呢？你覺(jué)得水波、聲波都是通過(guò)介質(zhì)傳出去的，所以電磁波也要有介質(zhì)？
沒(méi)道理啊，沒(méi)理由說(shuō)張三李四是這樣，就要求王五也這樣。更重要的是，你認(rèn)為波都有介質(zhì)，其實(shí)就是認(rèn)為所有的波都跟水波一樣，都是通過(guò)相鄰介質(zhì)點(diǎn)的力學(xué)作用傳出去的。但我們已經(jīng)說(shuō)了電磁波跟水波不一樣，那就不能套這個(gè)邏輯了，更多細(xì)節(jié)可以看看我的《相對(duì)論誕生：愛(ài)因斯坦是如何創(chuàng)立狹義相對(duì)論的？| 主線》。
因此，到了狹義相對(duì)論，我們是徹底無(wú)法再把電磁波當(dāng)作某種介質(zhì)（以太）的振動(dòng)了，無(wú)法再把它還原為某種微粒的衍生現(xiàn)象了，這就跟牛頓的物理圖景徹底沖突了。
于是，我們現(xiàn)在就有兩種東西：一種是實(shí)物微粒，比如分子、原子、質(zhì)子、中子等，它們看上去可以由更基本的微粒組成；另一種就是無(wú)法看成實(shí)物微粒的電磁場(chǎng)。
